can see that within the united states senate, the assault weapons ban in particular is a very tough road. because it's not just republicans. >> i can see because the nra is venal, they come after you, they put together large amounts of money to defeat you, they did this in '93 and they intend to continue it. >> this morning on the front page of the "new york times," i was reading about their program now to provide weapons a -- in other words, here is a whole new group of people that we can get these weapons to. they just don't happen to be adults, they're children. children will guns in terms of hunting is not a new phenomenon, they say we train them, we want to make sure that people who have guns know how to use them. >> one that's going to fight you tooth and nail and this is a couple of things they tell every insane killer in america that schools are the safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk. politicians have no business and no authority denying us the right, the ability and the moral imper tiff to protect ourselves and our loved ones from harm. >> wynn la pier

. >> do you think, steve -- you sound optimist uk about gun control. do you believe the united states senate, which is run by democrats now, 55 controlled, 55 seats are democrat, will they pass a bill which the house will have to swallow? will they do something real that they can take to conference and possibly get signed by the president? because they've got to take the lead. the house ain't going to do it. >> i think if the president takes the lead and he takes the case to the country i think the senate will pass something. pat leahy is a great example of frankly the challenge here because he's from a state where people value their guns. but once hunters understand and then most hunters do understand that this isn't a threat to their ability to hunt, this is a threat to those people who hunt other people with assault weapons and kill dozens at a time very quickly if they want to. and it will get to the house. and the house, you know, is going to have a tough vote. by the way, chris, there's one other thing in this bill. it also bans rocket launchers and grenade launchers. >> i think

rubio, the republican senator of florida, himself an immigrant from cuba to the united states. he's out there selling this comprehensive immigration reform legislation to some skeptics, including on the rush limbaugh show today. listen to this. >> i think there's this false argument that's been advanced by the left that conservatism and republicans are anti-immigrant and anti-immigration and we are not. never have been. we are pro-legal immigration and we recognize that our legal immigration system needs to be reformed. we also recognize, because conservatism has always been about commonsense, that we have an existing problem that has to be belt with in the best way possible. >> how important is rubio's role in getting this comprehensive legislation reform passed? >> i don't think you can overstate it, wolf. it's very, very important. here's someone with undeniable conservative credentials, a bona fide member of the tea party who is effectively trying to save, i would argue, save the republican party from itself on the question of immigration. is he somebody that can go on the rush limb

to know him. as well as the united states senate. he is on the farm bills and authored most of the authorization bills. clearly his decision is personal i'm sure. he is frustrated with washington, d.c. and members of both parties are frustrated with the gridlock. the republicans will nominate somebody in main street, but while georgia is the so-called red state, president obama was able to get more than 45% of the vote there. i assume that we are going have a credible democrat who will seek the party's nomination. >> it's interesting that the conservative was afraid that even more conservative republicans may challenge him and he decided time to move on. let's move on ourselves. jeb bush the former florida governor cowrote a piece of the "wall street journal" calling for comprehensive immigration reform among other things, writing this. some tell us makers are calling for piece meal changes such as issuing visas or conferring legal status of immigrants who were brought in as children. congress should avoid such quick ficks and commit itself instead to comprehensive immigrati

respect the prerogatives of the united states senate and the members of congress, you represent the american people, you're the other branch of government, you have the right to know what took place. and i have an obligation commensurate with the, you know, regulations and classifications and privacy and other things at play here, to help you get the answers and we'll do that. i hope we can do it in a noncontentious, appropriate way. >> thank you. could i just mention, i think you would aee with me that every day that goes by in syria, it gets worse. so there is, it seems to me, a very strong impetus that we realize that the present policy is not succeeding and to look at other options to prevent what is going on for now 22 months and 60,000 dead. >> but i think you would agree with me that whatever judgments you make, they have to pass the test of whether or not, you do them, they're actually going to make things better. >> absolutely. >> you have to make a test of the cost analysis in doing that. and i mean all kinds of cos. human life costs, treasure, effect on other countrie

hope is that as the president and his advisors look at the united states senate, they see, number one, a willingness to solve a problem of fixing the debt in a bipartisan way. i get the feeling they don't believe that about us. i don't know what else we can do to cause them to believe that. there is not the same kind of comfortable relationship back and forth that there should be. i've heard some people say well, the johnson-dirksen days, that was ancient history. that is ancient history. that was a long time ago. but madam president, human nature doesn't change. human nature doesn't change. not in 50 years, not in 100 years, not in 500 years. and there is plenty of goodwill here across the aisle, on this side of the aisle, at the beginning of this term, to work with a newly inaugurated president to say mr. president, we're ready to fix the debt, provide us the leadership, no great crisis is ever solved without presidential leadership in the united states, and you're the president, you're the only one who can lay out the plan. then we'll consider it, we'll amend it, we'll argue about

'm surprised the speaker of the house, president of the united states, we're very close to an immigration bill. give me a sense of where the senate is on that? where congress is on the immigration bill? >> my understanding from senator schumer, we will have a statement of principles, hopefully within the next week. what i pick up in the senate is that increasingly people understand that a pathway to citizenship is an important part of any immigration reform proposal. it is my belief there he will be an immigration reform proposal. my part of it is the agricultural part. and i've been meeting with workers through the farmworkers union to put together two parts of the program. one is a permanent program for farmers who need to use people 24/7, like dairy and other things, and a guest worker program. >> i have to quickly ask you a very quick question. show you a screen grab. what you will see is a picture of president obama and outgoing secretary of state hillary clinton. being interviewed together on "60 minutes." this has captured the 2016 group a lot. and if you are joe biden thinking about th

committee looks at the problem of gun violence in the united states, police work around the clock to save a 6-year-old boy held hostage by a man with a gun. for the past 17 hours that little boy has been held in an underground bunker in midland city, alabama, not far from the georgia border. police say the boy was taken after an armed man got aboard a school bus, demanded children, shot and killed the bus driver, and then fled to that underground bunker with the boy. neighbors describes what they've been told. >> i talked to the girl that was on the school bus and she told me he came on the bus with a gun, shot into the ceiling or the floor board once and shot the bus driver three times after asking for a child, two children between 6 and 8. the school bus driver apparently he did everything he could, he said you can't do that, threw the bus into reverse, floored the gas and that's when the bus alarm came on and tried to get out of the way but it was too late, he already shot the bus driver three times. >> our affiliate wdhn says the gunman is a 65-year-old man, reporter josh roltenberg i
